Edward Phillips Oppenheim (1866-1946), was an English novelist, in his lifetime a major and successful writer of genre fiction including thrillers. He composed some one hundred and fifty novels, mainly of the suspense and international intrigue nature, but including romances, comedies, and parables of everyday life.

One positive thing that I can say about Oppenheim’s book is that its plot is completely different than any I have encountered before. The book was written in 1931, and it is badly dated. I don’t ordinarily consider that a defect, but in this case it seems the author was ignoring, or was ignorant of, important historical events of his own time that belied the main points of his story. I could not determine if Oppenheim intended the main character, Warren Rand, to be a Fu Manchu-like fiend or a benefactor of mankind. Having finished the book, I’m still not sure. It is Rand’s ambition to become so rich and powerful that he will be able to ram disarmament and world peace down the throats of the governments of the world. He is unmitigatingly Eurocentric in this endeavor, and his ideals are fascist. All the newspapers of the world, and the educational institutions, should be “universal in their principles and fixed upon the same foundation – what the world wants.” As determined by Rand, presumably. He praises Mussolini for having redeemed his country because he didn’t allow “a diversity of thought or opinions in the elementary principles of government.” Apparently, he supposed that Mussolini would have gone in for disarmament. I don’t. In working to achieve his goal of world peace he tries to keep “collateral damage” to a minimum, but has no qualms about murdering the innocent.Aside from finding the main character repugnant and the story dated, the characters are not well developed and remain rather one-dimensional. Unless a reader is interested in seeing into the mind of an unique author, I would not recommend this book.

Up the ladder of gold is an engaging novel of the intersection between money and politics in the Europe of 1930. The secretive financier and Press baron Warren Rand is working to bring about Global Peace and Disarmament, against the plotting of England, France, Germany, and Russia.
The story expands to include the chief characters in Rands life. Tellesom, a British officer who becomes his security chief, and falls in love, unknowingly with Rand's estranged daughter. The financier and financial wizard John Glynde who marries the adorable spy. And a large cast of evil Russian and German spies.
Rands motivation to dedicate his immense fortune to the cause of peace remains hidden for much of the story. His machinations of the gold market and international sabotage bring the major players to the table. The book shows the interesting attitudes of Europeans towards America, the failure of the Revolution in Russia, and the plotting of Germany for a second war.
